“The first trip Kelly and I took to Tromsø, Norway, was in September of 2024 for the International Snow Science Workshop. The first dusting of snow had fallen, and it was easy to envision the surrounding terrain blanketed with white, in contrast to the dark blue Arctic Ocean. Last April, I returned to guide a ski and sail trip for Saveur the Journey. I’ve been fortunate to ski in many places, but the combo of traveling by boat through the fjords, designing interesting tours, and the wood-fired hot tub sold me on this experience. Trip Details

The ECMG Difference: With just eight guests and two professional mountain guides, this trip offers an exceptional 4:1 guest-to-guide ratio, compared with the 6:1 ratio commonly offered by many ski touring outfitters. This smaller ratio provides more personalized guiding, greater flexibility in terrain selection and group management, and a more intimate overall experience.

What makes this trip special: We’ll be sailing through the fjords of Norway on the Thomas Fernley, a boat built in 1938 that has been renovated to include modern-day comforts. After departing from Tromsø, we’ll sail through the gorgeous Norwegian fjords, targeting the best ski lines and snow. At the end of each ski day, we’ll enjoy a delicious meal, a wood-fired hot tub, and beautiful views.

About the Thomas Fearnley:

  • Length: 18 Meters
  • Bathrooms: Yes, there are bathrooms with hot showers and flush toilets 
  • Wood-fired Hot Tub: There is a wood-fired hot tub, which will be fired for post-skiing soaks
  • Sleeping: Bunk-style sleeping, along with gear storage
  • Gear Drying: Boot liners, gloves, and other wet gear can be dried in the engine room. Additional drying space is available in the galley near the wood-fired cook stove.
  • Meals: All meals and ski-day snacks while aboard the Thomas Fearnley, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

We require that all guests have an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe for our outings. 

March 19: 

  • Arrive in Tromsø, Norway. 
  • We recommend arriving in Tromsø by midday at the latest
  • Group orientation in the afternoon
  • Group welcome dinner 
  • Covered (Lodging and Dinner)

March 20: 

  • Gear check in the morning
  • Opportunity to explore Tromsø
  • Load the Thomas Fearlney at 6 PM
  • Safety briefing, dinner aboard the boat, set sail to our first ski destination
  • Covered (Breakfast, Dinner, Lodging on Boat)

March 21-26:

Ski and sail the beautiful fjords of Norway. 

  • Breakfast is typically served around 7:30
  • Depart boat around 8:30-9, by zodiac if we aren’t docked
  • Ski until around 4
  • Return to the boat, hot tub, après, chill time, dinner
  • Covered (Breakfast, packed Lunch, Dinner, Lodging on Boat)

March 27:

Return to Tromsø, say goodbye to our ship, captain, and crew. (Lodging on own)

Good fitness, advanced downhill ski/ride skills, and previous ski touring experience required. 

  • Advanced skiing/riding ability in variable conditions
  • Comfortable ascending approximately 4,000’ in a day. Daily elevation gain will vary depending on conditions, objectives, and group desires.
